At Meta Connect 2023, Mark Zuckerberg unveiled an addition to the tech giant's ever-expanding universe: a collection of AI personas, each with its unique interests and personalities. Users can now engage in conversations with these digital characters through Instagram, covering an array of topics, from cooking and workouts to travel and general life advice. The tool has entered its live beta phase, allowing users to dive into this experience.
Currently, the rollout of Meta AI is exclusive to the United States, and it promises a 1-on-1 chat experience with these AI personalities.
These AI personas, despite their celebrity likenesses, aren't what they seem. Meta decided to add a unique twist by making these chatbot characters using the faces of celebrities like:
- Snoop Dogg is playing Dungeon Master, your guide on a choose-your-own-adventure journey.
- Tom Brady is playing Bru, the wisecracking sports debater who pulls no punches.
- Paris Hilton is playing Amber, your detective partner for solving whodunnits.
- Kendall Jenner is playing Billie, your no-nonsense, ride-or-die companion.
But there's a catch: the personas have absolutely nothing to do with the celebrities themselves. For example, Kendall Jenner's AI persona, known as Billie, takes on the role of an older sister offering life advice. While you'll see Jenner's face and the occasional canned video reaction from the persona, your actual conversation is with something akin to ChatGPT—an AI language model developed by OpenAI.
Despite the hype about humanizing AI interaction, the reality of the experience is more like to texting with a chatbot. The videos of the celebrity personas play a limited role in the conversation. Although you may see their reactions, smiles, and poses at the top of the screen, these visuals don't always align with the ongoing conversation.
In essence, Meta's AI personas, while intriguing and star-studded, are a reminder that even in the metaverse, appearances can be deceiving. The true magic lies in the AI behind the celebrity masks, offering users a novel, if somewhat unconventional, conversational experience.
